Maintaining You: How Regular Health Checks Can Help

Use your preventive care member benefit to stay on top of your health.

Taking care of property and belongings requires regular upkeep. If you own a home, you make sure your roof is in good shape to prevent damaging leaks. If you own a car, you get your oil changed to make sure your engine is protected. What about your body? What steps do you take to make sure it works the way it’s supposed to?

An annual physical and wellness visit with your primary care provider (PCP) is one of the best ways to take care of yourself. This yearly visit is covered at no cost as part of your health plan.* It’s an important time to connect with your provider about your overall health. Regular preventive care can help uncover problems earlier, when they may be easier to treat, and prevent others down the road. This is your opportunity to ask an expert about changes or symptoms you’ve noticed and talk about things to watch for. If your provider finds that you have high blood pressure during your annual exam, they can help you take action to improve it before it causes problems. That may mean advice about diet and exercise, or it could be medication to help prevent heart attack and stroke.

Be sure to get preventive care to keep yourself in good shape. You might not notice damage on your house without checking for it. Similarly, you might not know there’s a problem with your health unless your provider checks you out.
